In A World of Excess & Access, the Desire for Spiritual Fullness is More Important than Ever

We all know the common feelings and symptoms of insatiability. For some, it pushes us to be more than what we think we can be, and for others, it pushes us to neverending desires that feel like there will never be a peak or point of contentment and pleasure.

In our globalized world, it’s easier than ever for you to find exactly what you’re looking for. If you want to know something you can search for it and have the answer almost instantly. If you’re craving a certain food, grocery stores that stock items from all over the world will probably be able to provide it to you. We live in a time of instant gratification and instant satisfaction. And comparison.

It has never been easier to see what everyone else has and everything you’re “lacking”. Where you’re “falling short” or not doing enough. This grows resentment, discontentment and dissatisfaction with what you currently have, feel and accomplish.

Psychologists know that we humans feel satisfied when things go our way. But they also know that things never go our way all the time– pleasure is temporary and discomfort is inevitable.

As we put pressure on ourselves in January and into the year, we are looking for what’s next to accomplish and fulfil. And trust me, you will accomplish a lot and you will be proud of how far you’ve come. And you should be! But that will still never feel like enough.

But you know what is enough — your connection with Him. What a sweet mercy that Allah (swt) made the world like this. Because of His love for you, He made everything in the world unsatisfying so that you would come back, seek Him and trust in Him — leading to true bliss.

That’s why the dua HasbiAllah (“Allah is Sufficient for me”) is one that we should repeat daily. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured. [Quran,13:28]

Let’s take a pause. Many moments of mindfulness, being present and grateful. Let’s slow down our never-ending pursuit of worldly things and start today to increase the time we read, study, learn, and understand ourselves, the Quran and our ultimate connection to knowing Allah (swt).
